A challenging 56-mile recreational bike ride from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare via the Mendips and the Somerset Levels.

Preparations are now underway for the 2012 Great Weston Ride on Sunday 15th July 2012, and once again our aim is to make it even bigger and better than this year's very successful event.

It's a truly spectacular route, and the Ride is suitable for all sorts of riders, from complete novices to experienced, regular cyclists - it has something to offer everyone, and it's really about having fun and rising to your own personal challenge!

But don't just take our word for it - instead, spare a few minutes to read the comments and feedback from the 2010 and 2011 riders on our 'Rider Feedback' pages (on the menu on the left).

Hopefully this will give you all the encouragement and confidence you need to enter the 2012 Great Weston Ride, and we look forward to seeing you on the start line!

The Great Weston Ride is a fun yet challenging recreational bike ride that offers a significant physical challenge for the cyclist AND the opportunity for a fun day out by the sea with family and friends.

The ride starts in Bristol and then weaves its way along the highways and byways of North Somerset, following a spectacular course through the Mendips and across the Somerset Levels, before finally finishing on the seafront in Weston-super-Mare.

It's not a race, there's no official timing, and everyone's welcome to come along and sample the delights of the Somerset countryside en route to the coast - the objective is to enjoy the day and the sense of achievement that completing the ride will bring!

And the route itself is designed to appeal to everyone - experienced cyclists, recreational riders, commuters, and even non-cyclists who are willing to rise to a challenge. All you need is a bike, a bit of determination and a sense of adventure!

Rising to the challenge in 2011 - as you can see, it's Better by Bike!

And, of course, with the ride ending by the sea it's the perfect opportunity for friends and family to meet the riders at the finish line, celebrate their achievement and then enjoy a family day out on the beach.

The ride itself takes place on predominantly quiet country roads, with a clearly-marked and marshalled route and full mechanical and medical support throughout.

Official refreshment stops are also provided, and of course for those of a more leisurely disposition there will be many other opportunities to stop and sample the famous West Country hospitality and/or take in the breathtaking scenery!

NB The first two Great Weston Rides reached capacity in terms of the number of entries, and there will once again be a limit on the total number of places available for the 2012 Ride.  Therefore, riders are advised to enter early to avoid possible disappointment.
